How much does Citizenship cost?
Citizenship is $240 for a standard application and $40 for a pensioner’s application, payable to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship. There is no fee involved for attending a ceremony.
How long does the application process take?
Normally, the application process takes around six weeks. This is dependent on whether the application needs further investigation by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship. It can then take a few months from the date of approval until you are invited to attend a citizenship ceremony.
How soon will I be attending a ceremony?
Every endeavour is made to invite candidates to the next available ceremony but, due to large numbers, this is not always possible. Currently, there is a three to four-month waiting period.
Where are the ceremonies held?
Citizenship ceremonies are held at the City of Bayswater Civic Centre, 61 Broun Avenue, Morley. The Australia Day citizenship ceremony is usually held elsewhere and candidates will be made aware of the location.
How often does the City of Bayswater hold ceremonies?
The City holds a number of citizenship ceremonies throughout the year. These are held every two months, with the three largest ceremonies held in January, September and October.
Do I need to memorise the pledge before the ceremony?
No. The Presiding Officer will recite the pledge to the gathering line of people. The Presiding Officer will ask that you repeat the pledge after him/her. Upon arrival, a copy of the pledge is provided to each candidate so you may read the wording, should this be preferred.
As I am already enrolled to vote, do I need to re-enrol?
All new candidates, regardless of whether they are already enrolled to vote, must complete an enrolment form so their listing at the Electoral Office shows they are an Australian Citizen. The relevant forms for enrolment are provided at ceremonies to all candidates for their completion.
Can I bring family and friends to the ceremony with me?
You are welcome to bring two (2) guests with you to your citizenship ceremony. When you receive your invitation you are asked to let council know if you will be attending and how many guests you will be bringing with you. This will help with the processing of your paperwork and also help council with catering requirements.
