Harmony Week Celebrates Diversity

Posted on March 10, 2017
The City of Bayswater's Libraries will be alive with activity from March 15 to 21 for Harmony Week.

Across the week the libraries will be hosting great free activities that promote the community's cultural diversity.

"We live in a very culturally diverse part of Perth and this should be celebrated," Mayor Barry McKenna said.

"Harmony Week allows us to embrace the rich tapestry of cultures and people who make up the City of Bayswater and explore that diversity through stories, film and interactive activities."

Maylands Public Library will host a colourful Oriental Dance display on Thursday March 23 at 6pm by accomplished Perth dancer Suzanne Oehlers.

Suzanne will be speaking about the history and origins of Oriental or 'belly dance' and will perform on the day with Senior dance troupe 'Diamontease' who range in age from 67-80.

At the Bayswater Library there will be a 'Colourfest' film night on Wednesday March 22 at 6pm showcasing diverse Australian made short films and the role of immigrants in the community.

There will also be a Bollywood dance workshop for pre-schoolers at Bayswater Library on Wednesday March 22 which will encourage children to take part.

"This week is really an opportunity to acknowledge our diversity while working to remove barriers that still exist in the community," Mayor McKenna added.

Harmony Week offers an opportunity for all Western Australians to celebrate our vibrant, diverse State.

The week is aimed at experiencing, exploring and appreciating WA's rich cultural, linguistic and ethnic wealth.
