City's workshops build on the 'identity' of Town Centres

Posted on March 17, 2017
The City of Bayswater will host four workshops with local businesses and community members to canvass their ideas on how the uniqueness of their town centres can be preserved and leveraged.

Mayor Barry McKenna urged community members to attend the workshops to be held in Morley, Noranda, Bayswater and Maylands.

"These workshops follow on from the appointment of two Place Managers whose role is to work alongside businesses and community groups to create engaging, high quality public spaces and bring vibrancy to the streets of the town centres of Bayswater, Maylands, Morley and Noranda," Mayor McKenna said.

"By partnering with local communities the uniqueness of each town centre can be preserved and leveraged. Tapping into the identity of each town centre is essential to the creation of vibrant 'hubs' where people gather to eat, shop and be entertained.

"From the multicultural flavour of Morley town centre with its plethora of Asian restaurants to the emerging café culture in Bayswater and the arts and cultural scene in Maylands - we need to build on these positives.

"Community input is paramount as regular users of centres are a valued resource when it comes to what is needed to bring retail strips to life at different times of the day. These workshops will ascertain community priorities for improving the vibrancy and economic performance of the City's town centres."

The workshops will inform the development of Place Activation Plans for each individual town centre and activation groups will be established to work alongside the City's new Place Managers to implement the Plans.

Place Activation Plans could include improvements to shopfronts, streets and footpaths, tree planting, and the addition of street furniture and public art. Plans could also outline ways to improve the marketing of retail centres via branding and hosting of events.

Community members interested in attending one of the four workshops can contact the City's Place Management Team at place.management@bayswater.wa.gov.au or call 9272 0616 or 9270 4173.
