Bushfire season a reminder to get ready

Posted on September 29, 2017

You have until 1 November this year to make sure that your property is bushfire ready.

Even though the warmer weather feels like it might never break, summer isn't far away and with it the threat of bushfire damage to local homes and properties.

It is pertinent to be aware of the dangers of bushfire season and prepare your property accordingly by taking a pro-active approach to reducing any risk.

With this in mind the City is working closely with the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) to highlight the risks to the community.
"As the warmer weather approaches and the bushfire season gets underway, now is a good time for residents to ensure their property is bushfire ready," Mayor Barry McKenna said.

"There are quite a few properties in the City situated on bigger blocks (over 2000m2) such as those located close to the river and in the Bayswater Industrial Area. Owners of these properties need to make sure they clear a 3m wide fire break around the perimeter of the property and around any buildings.
"With high temperatures once again predicted for this coming summer, it makes sense to be bushfire aware and we urge our residents to take the threat of bushfires seriously."
Residents are being urged to have a three metre fire break established around the perimeter of their properties if their block is more than 2,000 square metres.
For smaller properties, owners should remove any flammable material, such as dead plants and long dry grass from the entire block and lawns should be mowed regularly to keep the danger to a minimum.
The bushfire season runs this year from 1 November 2017 to 31 March 2018.
