The role of quality open spaces in our urban environment is often under-estimated. They lift our streetscapes, enhance our sense of well-being, and generally make our built environment more liveable and attractive.
Recognising that space in our town centres and suburbs can be limited in supply, the City has come up with an innovative way of creating pop-up public open spaces for everyone to enjoy through the creation of miniature parks.
The idea is for businesses and residents to look at transforming single parking spaces in town centres to make them open to all by using planter boxes, landscaping elements, chairs and other suitable street furniture.
The system has worked really well in lifting other town centres to make them more appealing to pedestrians and shoppers.
To make creating a miniature park or 'parklet' as easy as possible, the City has produced some easy to follow guidelines that feature examples of well-designed parklets.
I want to urge local businesses to get involved in this initiative by contacting our Place Management Team on 9272 0616 or 9270 4173.
