Unique, exciting, thriving, welcoming - these words are often used when residents describe their ambitions for a dynamic town centre.
Last financial year the City committed $29,000 to community-led projects to help our town centres flourish and I'm happy to report that another $40,000 has been allocated for 2017-18. Priority will be given to projects that have considerable community support and involvement in line with the adopted Place Activation Plans.
To create healthy town centres it is essential we build on their specific strengths and qualities so they will complement instead of compete with each other. That way all four of our centres can prosper, even in times of economic downturn. We also need to work in partnership with our local community. After all, nobody is better positioned to drive or assist with activation projects than residents, businesses, and property owners.
The first projects have already been completed; Morley now has fairy lights and Maylands recently had an amazing art exhibition at Studio 281. Other projects are currently under development in Bayswater including a mobile parklet, speaker's corner and heritage walk.
We have exciting times ahead of us.
