River Friendly Workshop to Delight Gardeners

Posted on May 05, 2017

Local garden enthusiasts are in for a treat in May when Gardening Australia guru and environmental scientist Dr Josh Byrne visits Bayswater to host a 'Your Garden' workshop.

Josh is a familiar face from ABC TV's Gardening Australia program who has a passion for creating productive and water efficient gardens.

The workshop aims to inspire residents with ideas for their gardens while also encouraging them to do their bit to help the Swan River.

Each year around 250 tonnes of nitrogen and 26 tonnes of phosphorous enter the river - nearly double what it can safely receive.

"This isn't about tearing up your lawns and covering everything in mulch," Dr Byrne said.

"There are simple and cost effective steps we can take to reduce nutrient pollution and it starts with building healthy soil and only feeding plants what they need, when they need it."

Supported by the Department of Parks and Wildlife’s 'River Guardians' and the Water Corporation’s 'Waterwise' programs, the two-hour event will showcase the latest ideas in environmentally friendly gardening. It will also provide participants with the practical information needed to get the best results from their gardens.

Mayor Barry McKenna said having Josh run the workshop was a coup for the City.

"Fans of Gardening Australia and anyone who is mindful of making their garden sustainable and as water efficient as possible should register for the workshop," Mayor McKenna said.

"It's an honour to have Josh come and talk to our residents, answer their questions and concerns and share his vast gardening knowledge."

"We can all do our bit in the garden to help the Swan River."

The workshop takes place on Wednesday, May 24 from 6.30pm to 8.30pm at the Bayswater Civic Centre's Embleton Room at 61 Broun Avenue Morley.

Bookings are essential for the free event by calling 0488 311 090 or www.riverguardians.com/education/gardening-workshops.
