City announces Art Award and Exhibition Winners

The City of Bayswater has named artist Clare McFarlane the winner of the Open Prize at this year's 2016 Art Award and Exhibition.

Clare's piece, entitled 'Study of the Neck' won the prestigious $5,000 award at this week's award's ceremony held at RISE in Maylands for it's beautiful portrayal of the nape of a woman's neck.

Other winners who were highly commended included; Sarah Thornton-Smith for 'Momentum', Jillian Kurz for her artwork 'Desert Codes' and Monique Bosshard-Curby for 'The Wrong Map'.

The Best High School entry this year was taken out by Izabella Kitching for her artwork 'My Sister Emma', runner up was Erika Van Der Wal for 'Sinking' and the Best Sculpture Award went to Denise Pepper for 'Medici Ruff'.

Mayor Barry McKenna said this year's entries showed the true scope of artistic talent in the local area.

"There are so many talented artists living and working in the City of Bayswater; the standard of work this year has been truly outstanding," Mayor McKenna said.

"The city is very happy to support local emerging artists - we believe that art is an important part of the rich tapestry that makes up our vibrant community."

Local places and faces were also a big part of the exhibition this year with the Best Bayswater Resident Award going to Elizabeth Marruffo for 'Sanctuary of Worthless Remains' and Best Bayswater Art Society Member Award to Janet Day for 'Bayswater Local Nankeen Night Heron'.

Behzad Alipour won the Best Ellis House Member Award for his work titled, 'Faded Dream'.

Entries to the competition are in a variety of mediums including oil, acrylic, water colour, pastel, printmaking, gouache, charcoal, pencil and for the first time this year, sculpture (3D works).

The Exhibition continues at The RISE until Sunday 4 December.
