Morley Library Comes to Life with New Mural

Posted on April 07, 2017
The walls of the Morley Library will come to life next week thanks to a grant from City of Bayswater as part of their Community Art Grants Program.

Successful grant recipient Not for Profit group MPA Skills will work with 10 pre-apprentices ranging in age from 16 to 28 to paint a mural which will depict the Swan River and the natural beauty of the Bayswater area.

The mural will be painted on the library's interior walls and will span its length.

MPA Skills Painting and Decorating Trainer and Accessor Stephen Delaney will lead the project, sketching the mural onto the walls, then working with the apprentices to paint it.

"I'm very passionate about painting and this project is a great opportunity for our pre apprentices," Mr Delaney said.

"These are ambitious and bright kids and I want them to know that this industry can be a pathway into creativity and working as professional artists.

"My inspiration for the piece was the City's Strategic Community Plan which talked about keeping its open spaces as green as possible and as Bayswater is nestled on the banks of the Swan River it seemed fitting to have a mural that encompassed that."

Mayor Barry McKenna said the innovative Community Art Grants Program provided an important avenue for young people to showcase their talents.

"Art is about joy, it brings public spaces to life and is tied into a community's sense of place," Mayor McKenna said.

"This project offers the opportunity for apprentices to collaborate with an experienced artist and contribute to the vibrancy of our City.

"The City of Bayswater is keen to foster and develop local art. Our ability to express and celebrate our creativity, identity and history is an integral part of our cultural identity."

The City is also working with video production company Dark Horse Agency to create a time lapse video of the mural as it is being created.

The Community Art Grants Program was developed using feedback from a forum held in February and reflects the communities' aspirations for a vibrant, diverse and engaging community.
