Community help sought to catch tree vandals

Posted on June 02, 2017
The City of Bayswater is asking for help from the community to identify and deter vandals from destroying newly planted street trees.

Mayor Barry McKenna said 18 street trees on Benara Road in Noranda were damaged or destroyed by vandals on just one day alone at the end of May.

"So far around 190 trees have been vandalised at a cost to our ratepayers of several thousand dollars.

"This wanton eco-vandalism hurts us all and is a crime, so I'm asking the community to be vigilant and to report those responsible.

"The verge trees are being attacked with alarming regularity and this has to stop."

The trees on Benara Road had been newly planted along the road verge as part of the City of Bayswater's winter planting program and commitment to increasing the City's tree canopy.

"Over the course of winter we will be putting a thousand trees into the ground to help green our City," Mayor McKenna said.

"It really is heartbreaking to see them being systematically damaged and destroyed in this way by some mindless thugs.

"Trees are valued community assets that help beautify our streets and provide many environmental benefits, such as filtering nutrients from stormwater, providing habitat for native birds and cleaning our air.

"The trees contribute to enhancing the urban living environment for our residents and ratepayers, so it is important that we protect these new verge trees and give them an opportunity to thrive.

"We need the community's help to save them."

Mayor McKenna wants the community to call the WA Police (131 444) to report suspicious behaviour or if they witness any vandalism underway, and to contact the City's Community Security Service (1300 360 333).
