For Mayland's resident Garth Civil this will be the 17th time that he's competed in the world's premier white water event, the Avon Descent.
But this year, he's not going it alone; his partner Leanne Smith will be competing with him for the first time.
The duo are excited about the challenge that lies ahead of them and Garth says he enjoys having to be fit of both body and mind to take on the race.
"The Avon Descent is a unique challenge and longest of its kind in the world. Preparing, participating and completion of the Avon is good for both my mental and physical health," the Perth City station Firefighter said.
"This year it's great to be doing it all with someone else and extra special doing it with my partner. I love the support the City of Bayswater gives paddling events and it makes me proud as a resident to be part of it."
The two day Avon Descent is a, 124km paddle and power dinghy river race that sees competitors from across Australia and the globe descend on Western Australia to test their skills and their stamina.
As part of the race the City of Bayswater will also host its annual Avon Descent Finish Line Family Fun Day from 11am on Sunday 6 August at Riverside Gardens.
This year it will feature Go Karts, a Kahuna slide, face painters, bouncy castles, Old MacDonald's Travelling Farm, carnival rides, and a walking dinosaur, plus plenty of food stalls and great vantage points for the race.
Mayor Barry McKenna urged residents to head down to the Bayswater's Riverside Gardens and cheer competitors on.
"Riverside Gardens is the perfect spot to witness the action of the Avon Descent first hand," Cr McKenna said.
"Be among the first to congratulate competitors as they cross the finish line after completing in one of the world's most exciting and unique white water events," he said.
"This is one of our most anticipated events of the season and a great day out for families in winter."
Presentations will be made and winning boats will be on display during the event.
