Fermented foods workshop boasts growing health benefits

If you're keen to learn how to make a powerful probiotic from a humble garden vegetable or taste a tea nicknamed the 'the immortality elixir' then come along to the Maylands Library at 2pm on Friday 22 for a hands on workshop with fermentation goddess Carla Weir.

Carla Weir from Gaia's Organic Gardens has long been helping people live more sustainably by establishing their own organic vegetable gardens, fermenting food and making their own beauty products.

As we learn more about the importance of gut health, fermented foods and drinks are increasing in popularity," Carla said.

"Sauerkraut for example has a phenomenal amount of probiotics in each serving. Recent tests have shown that just four tablespoons of homemade sauerkraut contains more probiotic bacteria than more than 100 store bought probiotic capsules.

"During the workshop I hope to give residents a crash course in fermenting and preserving foods that will directly benefit their overall health.

"I will teach them how to ferment Sauerkraut (cabbage) which can be used as a base to ferment other foods. I will also have some Kombucha, a fermented lightly effervescent sweetened black tea derived from mushrooms, available for tasting

The Preserving and Fermentation workshop is one of three sessions held at the City's libraries in September under the theme 'the importance of plants'.

On Thursday 21 September at 2pm WA Scientist of Year 2016, Professor Kingsley Dixon will speak about his work in plant science, restoration ecology and conservation science at the Morley Library. On Saturday 23 September at 10am John Yaxley from Bayswater's Environment House will show residents how to make their own organic garden and start composting.

City of Bayswater Mayor Barry McKenna urged residents to get along to the workshops.

"The City is delighted to offer the free informative workshops.

"In learning to become more sustainable we are not only saving money and improving our health but protecting our natural environment for future generations.

"Learning to create and maintain our own organic vegetable gardens, and ferment and preserve our own food is a giant step towards sustainable living.
