Let the Good Times Roll at City Skate Clinics

Posted on September 15, 2017
Want to learn how to drop the deck while you let the good times roll?

Then make haste to Wotton and Crimea Reserves to take part in the City's new skateboarding clinics with Skateboarding WA's Ben Bowring.

Ben, who has been skating for as long as he can walk, believes the clinics are suitable for all ages and skill levels.

"We want to encourage everyone to come and give skate boarding a try," Ben said.

"Beginner skaters can practice some basic moves on the grass before joining the group as their confidence grows.

"All ages can take part. I would encourage kids interested in just having a go through to experienced skaters to take part."

The Clinics, which are being funded by the City, will cover safety on the skateboard, awareness of other riders and will help build up skills.

"It's really rewarding to work with kids. Often they start off scared but after taking part in a clinic or two they've gained confidence and are skateboarding on the concrete along with other kids," Ben added.

"The City of Bayswater has some great skate parks; Crimea Reserve in particular is very well regarded by skaters in Perth."

City of Bayswater Mayor Barry McKenna said it was important to encourage children to get outside and stay active.

"We are The Garden City and we have some fantastic reserves for young people to enjoy," Mayor Mckenna said.

"In this glorious spring weather why not encourage the kids to get outside, get active, learn how to skate and make some new friends in the process?

"We're very excited to be working with Skateboarding WA to deliver these to local young people."

Skateboards and helmets will be provided at all clinics, but participants under the age of 18 will require consent from a parent/guardian to take part.

The next clinic takes place on Sunday, October 22 at Wotton Reserve, with one every month until May 2018.

There's also a jam session on Friday, November 24 with music and a mini skate competition.
The City will also host the Western Australian State Competition qualifiers at Crimea Reserve on Friday 12 January 2017 from 7pm. Look out for more event information closer to the date.
