Lacrosse Tournament brings colour to Baysie

Posted on October 06, 2017
This week Halliday Park Reserve in Bayswater has been full of colour and action for the Under 15 National Lacrosse tournament.

The tournament has seen boys and girls teams fight it out for the winner's trophy which will be announced on Saturday (7 October).

The annual tournament rotates between states and this year its WA's turn to host the competition.

The City helped support the local Bayswater Lacrosse Club and the tournament by contributing $6,000 to install lacrosse nets at the reserve and providing another $5,000 contribution towards re-tiling the changing rooms through the City's 2017 Community Capital Request Program.

It's predicted that approximately 300 players from all over Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria and New Zealand have played on the reserve over the past week.

"Encouraging children to stay fit and get active while enjoying a team sport is an important part of the Baysie lifestyle," Mayor Barry McKenna said.

"We like to help encourage local clubs and we're proud to be a part of this national tournament which has really seen Halliday Park Reserve come alive this week."

Bayswater Club President Jesse Bowland said the sport was growing in popularity.

"Lacrosse is a minority sport, but it's definitely gaining in popularity in Perth and this tournament encourages people to get involved in it," he said.

"We try and do a lot of junior development at all of the local schools with Smarter than Smoking who sponsor us, to run through basics and encourage kids to get in to it.

"This tournament is a great example of the fun team sport that Lacrosse is and we hope it encourages more young people to pick up sticks and get involved."
