City announces Blue Ribbon Club Award Winners for 2017

Posted on December 01, 2017
Local clubs, volunteers and talented athletes have been recognised this week as the City of Bayswater announced the winners of its annual Blue Ribbon Club Awards.

The awards were announced at a ceremony held on Thursday, 30 November at Dayton Community Centre.

The Blue Ribbon Club Awards aim to recognise outstanding work by local clubs and their volunteers, with awards for the Club of the Year, Volunteer of the Year and Athlete of the Year.

Carole Bowland from Bayswater Lacrosse Club Juniors was named the winner of the Volunteer of the Year award, for her hard work in securing funding for club projects and ensuring smooth day to day operations. Carole has been instrumental in a substantial growth in membership over the past two years, as well as the club gaining the hosting rights for the U15 national championships.

Perth Bayswater Rugby Union Club received the Club of the Year award, with the club recently expanding to accommodate female rugby teams as well as on-field success across several junior grades. The club has been an active part of the community, participating in the Bayswater Connect Project in 2016 as well as conducting a number of mental health initiatives.

Tanika Lockley from Emberson Little Athletics Club received the Athlete of the Year award, having won a gold medal at the international competition in Malaysia in August, in addition to being club captain and a mentor to younger athletes.

“Clubs provide people with an avenue to be physically active and involved in their community, so it’s a priority for the City of Bayswater to recognise and reward those volunteers who are doing fantastic work behind the scenes," Mayor Dan Bull said.

"Congratulations to all of the winners of this year's awards."

The awards are held as part of the City’s Blue Ribbon Clubs program, which assists local sporting clubs to grow and develop by improving the skills, knowledge and practices of clubs and their volunteers.

It is funded by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries and supported by Vicinity Centres Galleria Shopping Centre.
