Energy Efficiency

This section provides information on energy-efficiency, in relation to building applications. Energy-efficiency is based on six climate zones. Perth is located in climate zone five.

Energy Efficiency Residential

The Building Code of Australia requires that all new buildings and additions meet a minimum standard for energy-efficiency. This requirement is measured by a star rating. The current requirement for Western Australia is 6 stars with an additional requirement for water-efficiency called 5-star plus.

From May 2012, the requirement is a 6-star rating.

Energy-efficiency for building applications can be provided in two ways:

1. “Deemed to satisfy” documents:
a. Glazing calculations.
b. Ventilation calculations.
c. 6-star compliance form.

or

2. Energy-efficiency assessment provided by an assessment tool, in accordance with the Building Code of Australia protocol. In most cases this will be provided by a registered ABSA practitioner.

All forms required for the “Deemed to satisfy” provisions can be located on the Building Commission website.

Energy Efficiency Commercial

The Building Code of Australia requires that all new buildings and additions meet a minimum standard for energy-efficiency. These requirements are covered in Part J of the code. The classification of the building (office, shop etc) will determine the extent and level of energy-efficiency required to be achieved. Documents relating to the “Deemed to satisfy” provisions include:

1. Energy compliance form.
2. HVAC compliance form.
3. Lighting compliance form.
4. Glazing calculation form.

All forms required for the “Deemed to Satisfy” provisions of the BCA can be located on the Building Commission website.

Alternatively, certification for each area of compliance required by the BCA will be required from a suitably qualified person.
