Privacy by design The City protects your privacy in accordance with the Privacy and Responsible Information Sharing Act 2024 (WA) and embeds a 'privacy by design' approach to everything the City does, meaning privacy considerations are built into systems, services and decision-making from the outset.
This statement applies to all personal and sensitive information handled by the City, including information collected through the City’s website, applications, forms, customer requests, community engagement activities and CCTV.
Personal information is any information or opinion about an identifiable individual. This may include your name, address, contact details, date of birth, payment information, location data, images, CCTV footage, and information about your interactions with the City.
Some personal information is also considered sensitive. This may include health information, criminal history, racial or ethnic origin, or other information that the City provides additional protections for.
The City only collects personal information when necessary to perform functions or deliver services.
Most information is collected directly from you when you submit forms, make a request, contact us, apply for a service, participate in community engagement, or use our website and online systems.
In certain circumstances, you may choose to remain anonymous when interacting with the City. However the City may require your personal information to carry out functions, provide services, or comply with legal obligations. For example if you apply for a community grant, the City will need to collect your name, contact and eligibility information to assess your application and notify you of the outcome.
When you visit our website, we may also automatically collect information such as your browser type, device information, pages visited, time spent on pages, and your IP address. This information is collected through cookies and analytics tools to help us improve performance, security and user experience.
In some cases, the City may collect personal information from third parties, where authorised or required by law.
The City uses personal information to carry out its functions as a local government.
This includes providing services, managing rates, payments, processing applications, responding to enquiries and complaints, delivering community programs, managing employment and recruitment processes, and supporting public health, safety and compliance activities.

The City does not sell personal information. Personal information is stored and handled within Australia and if overseas disclosure is required, the City will ensure privacy safeguards are in place.
The City takes steps to protect personal information from misuse, interference, loss, and unauthorised access, modification or disclosure. This includes a combination of physical, technical and administrative safeguards, including secure systems, access controls, encryption, monitoring tools, staff training and best practice cybersecurity measures.
You have the right to request access to personal information the City holds about you, and to request corrections.
You can make a request through the Freedom of Information process. There are generally no fees for access to your own personal information. The City may require proof of identity before providing access or making changes. The City aims to process requests as quickly as possible and in most cases, that will occur within 45 days.
