NAIDOC Week

Councillor Column
Jun 25 2019

NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year is particularly significant for the City of Bayswater, with our first Reconciliation Action Plan currently under review by Reconciliation Australia.

The City is hosting a series of events to celebrate NAIDOC Week, in line with the theme ‘Voice. Treaty. Truth. Let's work together for a shared future’. I'm particularly excited to welcome Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company back to The RISE on Tuesday 9 July for a free Noongar dreamtime stories performance. We're also proud to be a sponsor and stall holder at Town of Bassendean’s annual NAIDOC Week Family Day on Thursday 11 July.

For adults looking to develop a deeper understanding of the Noongar culture, there will be a Noongar storytelling workshop with Carol Foley at Maylands Library on Saturday 13 July. Children will enjoy Aboriginal painting with artist Bianca Wilder and a special NAIDOC storytime session with Bindi Bindi Dreaming.

NAIDOC Week is about moving forward together. It's an opportunity for Australians from all walks of life to support our local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community, so I encourage you to join the celebrations.
