Creating a more accessible City

Councillor Column
May 07 2019

As a large portion of our community lives with some type of disability, accessibility is a priority for the City of Bayswater. I'm pleased to let you know about some recent initiatives we've been working on in partnership with local businesses and organisations.

On behalf of the City's Community Access and Inclusion Advisory Committee (CAIAC), I have recently written to Australia Post with a request to improve their parcel collection services by allowing residents to consistently pick up parcels from the closest post office to their homes. This would make things easier for many people, especially those with limited mobility.

The City has teamed up with the property owner of the Coles store in Maylands to make the entrance from Caledonian Avenue more accessible. Three new ramps will be installed to assist seniors, those in a wheelchair and parents with prams. (The City also recently installed a new bike rack in much the same location to help those who cycle to the store).

A free information session about ACROD parking will be held on Tuesday 14 May from 9:30am at the Bayswater Community Centre. Representatives from National Disability Services will be on hand to provide information about ACROD parking permits, how they work, and who can obtain them.
