National Reconciliation Week

Councillor Column
May 21 2019

National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to reflect on our shared histories, cultures, and achievements. It's about fostering a meaningful relationship between the broader Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Guided by our Aboriginal Advisory Committee, the City of Bayswater has achieved some important milestones over the past few months. We are incredibly proud to have handed our draft Reconciliation Action Plan to Reconciliation Australia, paving the way for the City’s unique Reconciliation journey. After officially endorsing the Uluru Statement from the Heart, we now have the statement proudly displayed at the entrance of Council Chambers as a reminder of our commitment to Reconciliation.

The City will be holding a special Noongar Language and Cultural Session at Maylands Library during Reconciliation Week. Led by local Noongar language teacher Carol Foley, participants will learn about colours, numbers and greetings in Noongar language. Taking place on Saturday 1 June from 10am, this session is suitable for adults and children aged 12 and older. I encourage you to come along.
