Homelessness in our community

Councillor Column
May 28 2019

People experiencing homelessness are some of the most vulnerable in our community. Homelessness affects more people than you might think, with an estimated 9,000 West Australian's sleeping rough on any given night.

Individuals who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless can find themselves in this situation for a range of different reasons. Whether it's escaping domestic violence, suffering from mental illness, or being unable to find affordable housing – every situation is unique.

Homelessness is an important issue in our society, and requires all levels of government to work collaboratively to support those experiencing homelessness. With this in mind, Council has formed a working group to look more closely at the issue of homelessness in our community.

As a first step, the City has prepared a guide containing vital information about support services such as crisis accommodation, legal support and counselling available locally. It's a good starting point for people who are at risk, providing them with access to the information they need quickly. You can download a copy of the Homelessness Services and Information guide on the City's website or collect one at the Civic Centre. We know there’s more to be done. If you have ideas or expertise please get in touch with the new working group.
