Construction is underway for the first stage of redevelopments for the Morley Sport and Recreation Centre, which are on track to be delivered by June 2021.

The first stage of the redevelopment is costed at $5.5 million and includes the construction of two additional basketball courts within a new sports hall.

New sports lighting will also be installed on the adjacent rugby pitches. Additional toilets and change rooms to service users of the new sports hall are now also included as part of stage one.

City of Bayswater Mayor Cr Dan Bull said the redevelopment of the Morley Sport and Recreation Centre was one of four major projects fast-tracked as part of the City's response to COVID-19.

"Back in May, we allocated $600,000 towards the detailed design work as part of the City’s $5.09 million local economic and social stimulus package aimed at stimulating the local economy.

“The redevelopment would not have been possible without the support of the State government, in particular, the Member for Morley, Amber-Jade Sanderson MLA.

"Amber-Jade was instrumental in securing $2 million in Community Sporting and Recreation Facility Funding (CSRFF) towards the construction of two additional basketball courts.

“The City is proud to work with our local member to support its basketball community."

Amber-Jade Sanderson MLA said she was pleased the State government could contribute to the redevelopment of the much-loved facility.

“The construction of two additional basketball courts at Morley Sport and Recreation Centre will enable East Perth Basketball Association to further expand its State basketball programs right here in Morley.

“The future is looking bright for Morley. This is a wonderful example of State and local government working together and investing in Morley.

East Perth Districts Basketball Association Executive Member Mario Macri said he was pleased to see construction underway.

"With an increase in junior and women's teams, the redevelopment of Morley Sport and Recreation Centre will increase the capacity for our teams to train, and enable the basketball community to continue to thrive," said Mr Macri.

"The new building will be all ability accessible, meaning that community members of all abilities can enjoy the new courts."

"The upgrade will also mean that East Perth Eagles, will be able to expand its State basketball programs from the new Morley facility."
