Lyric Lane in Maylands will ring in the festive season to the tune of balmy summer evenings spent relaxing and dining outdoors, thanks to a unanimous decision by Council last week to approve the permanent part-time closure of the laneway.

The decision will see Lyric Lane closed to vehicles on weekdays from 5pm to 12am and on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 12.30pm to 12am - opening up the area for alfresco dining and events.

Mayor Dan Bull said the move was welcomed by local businesses and the community.

"Following the successful trial closure of Lyric Lane in March, before COVID-19 restrictions came in, and September this year, the City invited community feedback on a proposal to make the part-time closure of Lyric Lane permanent," Cr Bull said.

"The feedback we received from our community and Maylands businesses was resoundingly positive.

"People indicated they were keen to see Lyric Lane reach its potential as a vibrant public space with alfresco dining and live music options, paving the way for a safer, more connected town centre with an enhanced sense of community," he said.

Guided by the Maylands Town Centre Place Activation Plan, the activation of Lyric Lane has been a key initiative for the City and project partners over the past 12 months.

"Working together with local businesses Rossonero, Lyric Lane and Australian Development Capital, the City has enhanced Lyric Lane with street art, greenery and lighting creating an inviting space," Cr Bull said.

"Turning laneways into interesting places for people to visit, enjoy entertainment and support our local businesses is a key priority for the Maylands town centre."
