Attracting new investment is a key focus of the Economic Recovery Plan adopted by Council in October 2020.

The plan provides an additional $185,000 in funding on top of the City's $5.09 million local economic and social stimulus package announced in May this year.

The City recently provided support to Giovanni and Lisa Calabro, owners of Western Australian business Il Gelato, who decided to purchase land for a new manufacturing site in Bayswater.

Mayor Dan Bull welcomed the family business to the City.

"It is wonderful to see businesses establish roots in the City of Bayswater," Cr Bull said.

"It's an exciting time to buy in Bayswater's industrial area, which is conveniently located close to local transport and the international freight network, positioning the area well for future growth and investment.

"Of course, attracting new investment to the City isn't just about stimulating the local economy," he added.

"It's about welcoming people, their skills and their stories to be part of our community and I am thrilled to welcome Giovanni, Lisa and their family to the City of Bayswater.

"Through the Economic Recovery Plan, the City is committed to supporting our existing local businesses towards recovery and encouraging new investment so that our community, commercial and industrial areas, can thrive."

After travelling to Perth from the South of Italy for a holiday in 1984, Mr Calabro decided to stay, opening the first Il Gelato shop in Leederville in 1999.

Serving delicious scoops to Western Australians for more than 20 years, Mr Calabro and his wife Lisa expanded the company to be a national distributor.

Looking to grow their business further, including internationally, they decided to relocate their manufacturing operation from a rented space in Osborne Park, identifying and purchasing a new site in the Bayswater industrial area this year.

The site's proximity to freight and transport networks means the business is well positioned for future growth.

Ms Calabro said she was grateful for the City's guidance throughout the process.

"We'd both like to take this opportunity to express our sincerest gratitude for the proactive input from the team at the City of Bayswater - we have been made to feel very welcome from the outset," she said.

"Thank you for advocating for our family business, especially during this uncertain COVID period.

"We are passionate about leading the WA food industry sector and being a robust part of it for many years to come."
