Recycling to continue in the City of Bayswater

An agreement has been reached to prevent recyclables from ending up in landfill

Recycling to continue in the City of Bayswater
Feb 14 2020

The City is pleased to confirm an agreement has been reached between Cleanaway and the South Metropolitan Regional Council (SMRC) to prevent recyclables from ending up in landfill. The agreement comes after a fire destroyed Cleanaway’s South Guildford Material Recovery Facility in November 2019, impacting the City of Bayswater along with at least 20 other local governments.

On 13 February 2020, SMRC announced that at least 50,000 tonnes per annum of kerbside recyclables would be recycled at their facility, starting on Monday 17 February. Any additional recyclables would be recycled by Cleanaway at other sites in the Perth and Peel region.

City of Bayswater Mayor Dan Bull said the City was pleased to see a solution for recycling in place until Cleanaway’s South Guildford Material Recovery Facility can be rebuilt.

“After a temporary agreement between Cleanaway and SMRC lapsed in on 24 January, there was some uncertainty around where recyclables would end up.

“I am pleased that both parties could reach an agreement that will prevent thousands of tonnes of recyclables being dumped in landfill.

“Our community is passionate about sustainability and want to do the right thing when it comes to recycling, so I am pleased to reassure residents that their good recycling habits will continue to pay off.
