Solar panels are being installed on City of Bayswater buildings as part of its commitment to 100% renewable energy by 2030.

This month, the City installed 64 kilowatt solar panels to the roof of its Civic Centre, tripling the size of the current system. Ten City buildings now have solar panels installed, reducing the City’s total energy costs by more than $100k and carbon emissions by around 320 tonnes per year.

City of Bayswater Mayor Dan Bull said the move to solar power was both financially and environmentally sensible.

“The City is keen to ensure its everyday operations do not contribute to climate change. This is about the City of Bayswater taking action at a local level.

“We have a responsibility to deliver sustainable cost effective services to our community.

“The City’s most energy intensive buildings now benefit from solar power, including The RISE, Bayswater Waves and our Depot. The new system at the Civic Centre will pay for itself within three years.

“Our goal is to reach 100% renewable energy by 2030 over 10 years and net zero carbon emissions by 2040 over 20 years.

“We are looking forward to adding an electric vehicle to the City’s fleet next year, powered exclusively by solar energy.”

The addition of the 64 kilowatt system brings the City’s energy savings up to more than $100k per year across its buildings.

The City offers subsidies for residents to convert to solar power in their own homes through the Switch Your Thinking program. Visit Switch Your Thinking for details.
