This month, the City is presenting a series of free online workshops where kids can learn the tips and tricks needed to become a successful novelist.

Across three workshops, children's author Norman Jorgensen will explore 30 pieces of advice for composing a novel, picture book or short story.

Participants will learn how to plan a story, what to include or cut out, elements of style, how to make a reader fall in love with your writing and how to submit to a publisher.

The three writing workshops will be published on the City's Facebook page on Monday July 6, Wednesday July 8 and Friday July 10 at 11am.

Plus, a live illustration workshop will also take place over Zoom on July 14 at 10.30am, where kids aged 6-12 can draw along with illustrator and science presenter Aska.

Mayor Dan Bull said the online workshops were a great way for kids to unleash their creativity over the winter school holidays.

"Budding young writers and illustrators will love these workshops, they will come away with the tools needed to develop their own imaginative stories and pictures," Cr Bull said.

"We really encourage parents to get their kids involved, these activities are the perfect way to keep kids entertained and inspired over those rainy winter days."

The writing workshops will remain online and available to view throughout the school holidays, until July 19.
