Coronavirus (COVID-19) update
Mar 17 2020

“The City is working hard to do what it can to protect our community and staff and is taking steps to try to reduce the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19).

“Given the rapidly changing situation, City staff are meeting daily to assess all new information.

“The purpose of these meetings is to assess advice from the WA Health Department and Federal Government and implement measures to protect the community, take steps to protect staff working at the Civic centre and at our community facilities, and to ensure the continuation of services to the community, where possible.

“We are maintaining regular contact with Councillors to update them and seek guidance.

“I would like to assure you that the City is well placed to respond to this unprecedented situation.

“While this is unchartered territory for all of us, the City has a number of existing plans that guide our response.

“The City’s Emergency Management Plan was recently revised and guides our response to a disaster. Our Crisis Management Plan identifies a group of key staff who respond in any given crisis and work to bring services back online. Part of this is our Business Continuity Plan which is designed to identify core services and ensure their delivery in the event of an interruption - this also identifies ways to scale our business up and down.

“Our Business Continuity Plan was adopted in December 2019 after City staff participated in a full day crisis management scenario in October 2019.

“The City is working hard to ensure core services such as waste collection, building and planning approvals, rangers and security services, environmental management, parks and garden maintenance and local roads and footpaths upgrades and maintenance, continue to be delivered.

“The City cancelled three City run events, including last Saturday’s Maylands Twilight Markets ahead of the Federal government’s advice against holding non-essential, organised gatherings of more than 500 people.

“Today the City cancelled all events and programs taking place between tomorrow and Friday 17 April at the Bayswater, Morley and Maylands Libraries.

“Bayswater Waves and The RISE have increased cleaning regimes, reduced group fitness class sizes, increased the space between gym equipment and are continuing to monitor and maintain chlorine levels. The continued operation of these facilities is being closely monitored.

“At this stage Council meetings remain open to the public but will be held in the larger Embleton Room to allow for social distancing.

“We have placed signage at all our facilities advising visitors not to enter if they are unwell and to follow the WA Heath Department’s advice. We have also contacted all our contractors to advise them of their responsibility when entering City facilities.

“We will continue to monitor the situation with the best interests of our community and staff in mind."
