Morley Library's 'Meet the Author' event invites budding bookworms and writers aged 12-18 to come and listen to Holden's personal story behind his multi-award-winning book Invisible Boys, which recently took out this year's WA Premier's Prize for an Emerging Writer.

The debut novel centres on a group of different teenage boys growing up gay in Geraldton, which was recently optioned for film and TV production.

In addition to talking about his hopes for the screen adaptation, Holden will share his very personal impetus for writing the novel and talk about his own journey from being a manual labourer to a published novelist, and the trauma of his teenage years.

The event has been enabled by a grant through Lotterywest and Healthway Go for 2&5, as well as support from the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, and Children's Book Council of Australia (Western Australian Branch).

City of Bayswater Deputy Mayor Cr Filomena Piffaretti said the City was delighted to celebrate Book Week 2020 with local WA talent Holden Sheppard.

"The City is thrilled to provide an opportunity for young readers and writers to become inspired by Holden Sheppard's real life story and realise the power of storytelling," said Cr Piffaretti.

“A love of reading and novel writing can be incredibly exciting for kids and young adults, as it can help them learn more about the world and explore their creative side.

“We are lucky enough to have three libraries in the City; Bayswater, Maylands and Morley. If you haven’t visited your local library in a while, Book Week is the perfect excuse to pop down and reacquaint yourself with the joys of reading.”

Holden Sheppard - Meet the Author event will be held on Wednesday 28 October, from 5pm - 6pm at Morley Library. Book sales and signing will also be available at the event.

Bookings are currently open and can be made via Eventbrite here.
