The Economic Recovery Plan is the first of three to be presented to Council for approval this year, with Community and Infrastructure Recovery Plans set to come before Council in November.

Mayor Dan Bull said the Economic Recovery Plan includes an additional $185,000 in funding on top of the $5.09 million local economic and social stimulus package released in May this year.

“This Economic Recovery Plan is focused on attracting new investment and supporting our existing businesses as they recover from the impacts of COVID-19.

“The Plan includes a number of initiatives including the development of relationships with key industry representatives to promote investment in the City, business workshops, the implementation of a destination marketing strategy focusing on the major town centres of Morley, Bayswater and Maylands, and a business booster program.

“The City is experiencing an unprecedented period of change as the State government continues to focus on increasing residential density around transport nodes and activity centres. The State government has invested heavily in our City with a number of road and rail projects in the planning stages. New train stations are scheduled for construction in Bayswater, Morley and Noranda as part of the METRONET project. Main Roads have also planned improvements to the Tonkin Highway corridor to reduce travel times and improve connectivity to the State’s road network.

“Now is the time for us to capitalise on the opportunity this State investment presents by working with key economic and industry professionals, such as those from the property and development industry, to actively promote investment in the City and ensure good outcomes for our residents and ratepayers. It is important we understand how Council can support industries who want to establish themselves in the City and what support our existing business need to flourish. We committed to creating a sustainable future for all.

In 2019 the City joined the Small Business Friendly Local Governments Program.

“The Economic Recovery Plan outlines our commitment to the program as we undertake an audit of our processes to ensure we continue to make it easier for small business to interact with the City.

“The Economic Recovery Plan includes $200,000 of town centre improvement works funded out of Council’s $5.09 million local and social economic stimulus package adopted in May. Some works have been completed while others are in the planning stage. They include a new shade structure and seating for Bert Wright Park and the painting of shopfronts in King William Street in Bayswater, improvements to the space in front of the RISE in Maylands, the creation of a pocket park near Morley Library and the expansion of the Noranda Nook.

“This Economic Recovery Plan provides the City with clear direction as we navigate our path to recovery and emerge in a stronger position in the future."
