The Morley Town Centre will be revitalised as a vibrant and lively community hub, under a new partnership between RAC and the City of Bayswater.
Through its Reconnect WA initiative, RAC has allocated up to $1 million to work with local governments on revitalising public spaces, and is working with the City to reinvigorate the town centre and better link Morley Galleria, Morley Library and Coventry Village together.
RAC’s $250,000 funding contribution for the ‘A Connected Morley’ project will include support for:
• An alfresco-style activation at the corner of Walter Road West and Wellington Road;
• A new community space in front of the Morley Library; and
• Improved pedestrian connections within the Progress and Bishop Street precinct through creative wayfinding and streetscape enhancements.
RAC Group Executive Social and Community Impact Patrick Walker said the project will breathe new life into the area.
“We’re very excited to be partnering with the City of Bayswater through our Reconnect WA initiative to help revitalise the Morley Town Centre as a lively and people-friendly place for the community,” Mr Walker said.
“The project will turn under-utilised areas in the shopping and dining precinct into more vibrant spaces for people to spend time, socialise and interact, and we’re looking forward to engaging with local businesses and the community to co-design exactly what these spaces will look like.
“We’re passionate about creating more lively streets and inviting public spaces for Western Australians to enjoy, and we hope these changes will increase visitation and support local businesses throughout the Morley Town Centre.
“This project is a great example of how we can reimagine our streets and public spaces, and we hope it will inspire changes in other neighbourhoods to support safer, sustainable and connected communities,” Mr Walker said.
City of Bayswater Mayor Dan Bull said the City was pleased to partner with RAC on the project for Morley.
“The City is delighted to be partnering with RAC on a project that will make Morley a more pedestrian friendly and attractive place to shop, dine and linger by delivering a range of streetscape improvements co-designed by the local community," Mayor Bull said.
“The $250,000 grant provided by RAC will complement a number of City projects planned for Morley including new LED lighting, destination marketing initiatives, detailed streetscape design of key streets, and shopfront improvements.
“With a number of State Government projects underway, including a new train station and bus routes, Morley is well positioned as a strategic metropolitan centre."
