Parents can learn how to make a difference to the environment, and their bank balance, with modern cloth nappies, at three upcoming workshops hosted by the City of Bayswater.

Facilitated by the Nappy Guru, Kam Andrews, the free hands-on workshops will introduce parents to cloth nappies as an alternative to disposables, reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill.

City of Bayswater Mayor Dan Bull said the workshops were part of the City's commitment to waste minimisation through supporting behaviour change in the community.

"The City is proud to be leading the way in waste minimisation. This is just one of many initiatives we are undertaking to empower the community in reducing their personal contribution to landfill.

The workshops also complement the City's move to the Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO) waste system, which will significantly reduce the amount of household waste sent to landfill."

"Cloth nappies are an increasingly popular alternative for parents seeking an environmentally friendly option, as disposable nappies contribute a substantial amount of waste to landfill.

During the workshops, participants will have the opportunity to view the different styles and brands of cloth nappies available, find out how to fit and wash them effectively and more.

Nappy Guru Kam Andrews said the workshops would benefit new and future parents in discovering the world of cloth nappies and making a positive change for the environment.

"By opting for reusable nappies, parents have an opportunity to reduce their environmental footprint even before their child's first steps," she said.
"Every single cloth nappy re-used is one less sitting in landfill for 500 years. By switching to cloth nappies, we can save up to one tonne of waste per child going into landfill from disposable nappies.

"As well as less cost to the environment, cloth nappies are better for your budget, great for babies with sensitive skin and for cloth nappy addicts - they're also a bit of a fashion statement.

"Navigating the world of cloth nappies can be a little overwhelming, so the workshops are a great place to start. They're also a good opportunity to meet like-minded people on the same journey.

"In my workshops I share plenty of tips and tricks on using cloth nappies and ensure participants leave them equipped with all the knowledge and confidence to make switching to cloth easy."

Workshops will be held from 10am to 11.30am on Monday 31 May at Bayswater Community Centre, Thursday 3 June at Morley Library and Thursday 1 July at Maylands Library.

Residents can register online via the City's Facebook Events page.
