The City is working with Bold Park Community School in Maylands to deliver a tailored health and wellbeing program to kickstart healthy habits and address mental health among its students.

Across nine weeks during Term 3, 40 secondary school students have been participating in a series of workshops and activities with a focus on mental health.

The City successfully obtained $4,085 in funding from the Department of Communities under their COVID-19 Youth Recovery Grant to run the program.

City of Bayswater Mayor Dan Bull said the City was pleased to develop a diverse and engaging program for the students, with a spotlight on the important issue of mental health.

"In 2019, the City undertook extensive engagement with young people to inform the development of its first Youth Action Plan - The Platform. The results of the engagement identified mental health as the biggest concern for young people in the City," he said.

"In March 2021, the City facilitated a student planning session at Bold Park Community School to allow them to help shape the content and format of the program and identify their specific needs.

"The program focuses on psychological and lifestyle factors affecting high school aged students and helps them gain practical skills to manage stress and develop a toolbox of coping strategies.

"We've engaged with a number of local community groups and service providers to facilitate activities that will help students develop skills they can use on a daily basis to manage their own health and wellbeing.

"As part of the program, students will also take part in a range of activities including archery, basket weaving, nutrition workshop, tai chi, meditation, a colourful 'Marked' activity and gym sessions at The RISE.

"A series of mental health workshops facilitated by Helping Minds will be held throughout the program. At these sessions, students will develop an understanding of mental health issues, explore signs and symptoms of common mental illnesses, gain advice on how to talk to a friend about their mental health and learn where to get help. They will also look at the lifestyle factors that can lead to mental illness and learn coping strategies for managing stress and overwhelming situations."
