A local student's artwork showcasing the City's commitment to sustainability has been selected for the annual #shoWcAse in Pixels 2021 exhibition on display at Yagan Square in Perth City.

#shoWcAse IN PIXELS is an exhibition featuring artwork from local government areas, coordinated by Western Australian Local Government Association. The exhibition features digital artwork designs displayed on the 45 metre high tower in the heart of Yagan Square. The unique tower has a circular screen with 14 columns, representing the 14 Noongar language groups.

As part of the City’s Cultural Plan, the City invited students from Hampton Senior High School to create a digital artwork to be entered into the ‘Secondary’ category for high school students.

The school selected 'Kookaburra Spirit' by Year 12 visual arts student, Tunyaluk Yangyuen, which represents the City's commitment to sustainability and abundance of natural areas.

The blue background symbolises the painting of trees throughout the City blue to raise awareness of mental health under the Blue Tree Project. A kookaburra references the Eric Singleton Bird Sanctuary and the many parks and nature reserves in the City, while an olive tree to the right of the piece reflects the City's logo. Three framed images reference 'The Garden City', a vegetable patch represents the community gardens and the third image depicts the iconic West Australian Ballet Centre building. These elements come together to show how the City is leading the way with its community projects and preservation of natural and historical landmarks. The artwork was created using oil paint on canvas.

Artwork will be displayed in Yagan Square from 12pm to 1pm, Wednesday, 8 September to Monday, 20 September. Winners will be announced at the WALGA Convention on Monday, 20 September 2021.
