The City of Bayswater has partnered with Orana House this week to unveil a purple bench at Riverside Gardens to raise awareness of violence against women and children.

The Purple Bench Project from the Centre of Women’s Safety and Wellbeing supports the installation of purple benches in public spaces to honour victims of domestic and family violence.

Since 2018, the City in partnership with Orana House has installed 14 purple benches in public spaces across Morley, Bayswater, Noranda, Maylands, Bedford and Embleton.

The unveiling of the latest purple bench was followed by a minute’s silence to honour those who have lost their lives as a result of domestic and family violence.

City of Bayswater Councillors, staff and local community group members came together for the event, including City of Bayswater Mayor Filomena Piffaretti, Member for Mount Lawley Simon Millman MLA, City of Bayswater CEO Jeremy Edwards, Hon Patrick Gorman MP representative Marissa Williams and Orana House Manager Mel Rowe.

Each purple bench features a plaque with information for those who need advice or support relating to domestic violence, encouraging people to contact the Women’s Domestic Violence helpline on (08) 9223 1188 or 1800 007 339.

Domestic violence is a key contributor to homelessness in the City, as detailed in our Local Homelessness Strategy 2021-2025.
