A new category will be added to the City of Bayswater Community Art Awards to celebrate Aboriginal culture and showcase work by talented local Aboriginal artists.

Mayor Filomena Piffaretti raised a Notice of Motion at the City’s Ordinary Council Meeting last night requesting the new ‘Local Wadjuk Acquisition Award’ category be included in the annual exhibition. Council backed the request for the new category to be included in the City’s Community Art Awards, which will be held later this year.

“I think it’s really important we support the creation of works produced by local Aboriginal artists, and give more opportunities for people to share the unique stories of WA’s Wadjuk Noongar peoples,” Mayor Piffaretti said.

“This new category will help to encourage the visibility, expression and preservation of traditional and contemporary Aboriginal cultures, communities and identities in line with our Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan and Cultural Plan.”

Now in its twelfth year, the Awards continue to grow in profile and popularity within Perth’s arts scene. Held in spring, the Awards are an established event including a curated exhibition open to the public for two weeks after opening night, with all artworks available to purchase.

“There are currently 10 prizes available across nine award categories. The Local Wadjuk Award will attract a $5,000 prize equal to the Open Award to show equity, dignity and respect to local Wadjuk people who enter the award,” Mayor Piffaretti said.

“We will speak with local Aboriginal Elders to determine the most suitable name for the new category before entries open in September 2022.”
