Welcome to the spring 2023 edition of the Bayswater Brief.

Bayswater Brief spring 2023

Message from the CEO

It is exciting to see works progressing at Bayswater Waves, with the much-loved recreation centre due to open in time for the warmer months. The $7.4 million redevelopment will see a raft of upgrades, including a new entrance, expanded group fitness area, accessibility and sustainability improvements and a refurbished wave pool, lazy river and pool hall.

This year, the City is delighted to expand its ever-popular Community Art Awards and Exhibition into a two month-long festival. Bringing together workshops, performances, exhibitions and more from around our suburbs, the Flourish Community Arts Festival positions the City as an arts and culture destination. Why not check out the range of events on offer. Find out more inside.

This October will see the local government elections take place. Following local government reforms enacted by the Minister, there are some changes to this year’s elections including the introduction of optional preferential voting and the direct election of the Mayor. Ballot papers will be posted in late September and will be due back to the City by 6pm on election day, Saturday 21 October.

Do you know a resident who has made an impact in your local area? Consider nominating them for a Community Citizen of the Year Award. The City has five award categories that aim to celebrate those who have made outstanding contributions to their community. Nominations close on Tuesday 31 October.

If you’re looking for an opportunity to engage with older adults in the community, why not consider becoming an Age Friendly Ambassador. The City’s award-winning program is seeking to add new members to its volunteer group. Learn more on page 10.

Spring brings to a close the many planting days hosted by the City in partnership with community groups. It has been amazing to see people take up a trowel to help add native plants to our natural areas. If you’re interested in the outdoors, stay tuned for more information on how you can take part in the 2023 Aussie Bird Count in October.
