The City of Bayswater was recognised for its commitment to road safety at the WALGA Local Government Awards 2024.

The City was announced as a RoadWise Council, receiving 3 out of 5 ribbons in recognition of its holistic approach to the planning and delivery of local road safety activities.

“Being recognised by WALGA as a RoadWise Council highlights our commitment to improving road safety for our community,” Mayor Filomena Piffaretti said.

“As a City, we are focused on planning and designing a safe and sustainable transport system that meets the needs of all road users.

“Keeping our community safe on our local roads is a priority.”

In 2023, Council registered with WALGA as a RoadWise Council, as evidence of its commitment to road safety.

In 2022, the City partnered with Main Roads WA to roll out road safety treatments across suburbs to help increase safety around parks, schools and high-crash risk areas.

So far, the City has installed 40 treatments in the Embleton and Baywater areas, as part of Main Roads WA’s Low-Cost Urban Road Safety (LCURS) Program. The City is currently delivering 27 treatments in the Shearn Park area in Maylands. Treatments have been shown to slow traffic in residential areas as a whole.

In addition to rolling out LCURS treatments, the City remains committed to investigating and improving pedestrian connectivity and crossings, and assessing blackspot intersections to improve safety for all road users. The City also conducts regular staff training in aspects of road safety and participates in road safety audits.
