The City has been recognised for its dedication to fostering an age-friendly community, taking out the WA Age Friendly Local Government of the Year Award, as part of WA Seniors Week 2024.

This achievement reflects the collaborative efforts of various City departments committed to creating accessible and engaging spaces, programs and services for our older residents.

Key initiatives include:

  • Community Hubs: Facilities like Bayswater and Morley Community Centres foster social connections and combat isolation through programs such as Chatty Café and Savvy Seniors.

  • Library Services: Free digital literacy courses empower older adults to navigate modern communication tools, promoting independence and bridging the generational digital divide.

  • Recreation Centres: Programs such as Strength for Life, Silver Sneakers, aqua aerobics and a thriving Pickleball community encourage physical activity and wellbeing and enhance quality of life.

The WA Senior of the Year Awards, coordinated by Council on the Ageing (WA) in partnership with the Department of Communities, celebrate the contributions of older Western Australians and the individuals and organisations who support them.

The City is proud to lead by example, championing age-friendly practices that make a lasting and positive impact on the lives of older adults in our community.
