The City of Bayswater has collaborated with Community Arts Network and Moodjar on a project to decode five locations within the City.
The Place Names Bayswater project aimed to uncover and preserve the meanings of Noongar placenames within the City, with five sites decoded including Birralyn (Bayswater foreshore), Malgamongup (Bardon Park), Moorordup (Maylands train station), Nyurrdup (Bayswater train station) and Woorat (Maylands foreshore).
Traditional Owners, Noongar Elders and community knowledge holders living in or connected to Bayswater took part in cultural mapping workshops to explore the meanings of the decoded placenames.
Workshop participants then collaborated on a series of artworks that reflect the five locations, their cultural significance and the meanings of their placenames. An exhibition of these artworks will officially launch the project to the public, providing insight into the significance of these places in Noongar life and culture.
“I invite all community members to join us in celebrating our City’s Noongar culture and history at the opening of the exhibition, Birralyn Kaartadjin | Bayswater Knowledge,” said Mayor Filomena Piffaretti.
“A specially designed book that captures stories shared during the project and images of the community-created artworks will also be launched on the night.”
The exhibition will be held at The RISE from 16 April to 11 May.
Place Names Bayswater was supported by the Federal Government through the Indigenous Languages and the Arts program.
This project aligns with the City’s Innovate Reconciliation Plan.
