Spectators at Lightning Park Recreation Reserve in Noranda now benefit from improved shelter and seating, following a recent upgrade fully funded by the Australian Government.
City of Bayswater delivered the $735,000 project in partnership with the Noranda Sporting Association. The works included the installation of new bench seating, balustrading incorporating tables and a roof awning over the spectator area to provide year-round shade and weather protection.
Mayor Filomena Piffaretti said the upgrade delivers real benefits for local clubs, families and the wider community.
“Lightning Park is one of the City’s premier sporting facilities and an important hub for local sport and community events,” she said.
“This upgrade provides much-needed shelter and seating for spectators, offering protection from the elements and making the space more comfortable and inclusive year-round.
“We’re proud to deliver this project in partnership with the Noranda Sporting Association, and I thank the Australian Government for supporting a project that brings people together and builds stronger community connections.”
Federal Member for Hasluck Tania Lawrence MP said the Australian Government was proud to support the project.
“I am glad to see these upgrades completed for the benefit of our community and local clubs. With the new shelter and seating, it will be more comfortable for family and friends to come together year-round to watch local sports. I am glad the Albanese Labor Government could fully fund this project and thank you to Noranda Sporting Association for your continued advocacy.”
Lightning Park is used year-round by local clubs through the Noranda Sporting Association, including the Noranda Junior and Senior Football Clubs, Morley Eagles Tee-Ball Club and Perth Broncos American Football Club. Collectively, these clubs have around 1,000 members. The reserve also supports a range of public events and community gatherings.
The original facilities, built in 2008, included clubrooms and changerooms but lacked adequate shelter for spectators. The Noranda Sporting Association successfully advocated for the upgrade and secured Australian Government funding under the Investing in Our Communities Program to help deliver this project.
