Construction of a new urban forest in Riverside Gardens is now underway with the turning of the sod.
Mayor Filomena Piffaretti said the urban forest would deliver a cooler, greener landscape, reducing the urban heat island effect and creating habitat for native wildlife along with promoting healthier lifestyles, with tranquil, shaded spaces for all to enjoy.
“Riverside Gardens has long been a treasured gathering place for recreation and relaxation,” she said.
“The creation of an urban forest here will enhance its appeal, providing a sanctuary for residents and visitors alike.
"This initiative highlights our commitment to creating greener spaces, improving biodiversity and providing accessible areas where people can connect with nature and each other.
"By increasing tree canopy, fostering biodiversity and nurturing a healthier, more connected community, we will deliver long-lasting benefits for our environment and community members.
“I look forward to seeing this space transformed into a vibrant, natural parkland and a true asset to our community.”
This project is jointly funded by the Australian Government’s Urban Rivers and Catchments Program and the City of Bayswater, with the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries ($1 million); the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation, and Water Corporation ($600,000); and the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions ($233,147).
“I’d like to thank Federal Member for Perth Patrick Gorman for advocating and securing $200,000 in funding for this important project,” Mayor Piffaretti said.
Last year, the City engaged residents and users of the much-loved space to determine what community members would like to see in the design of a new urban forest. Greening Australia and the City also consulted with Traditional Owners for the development of concept designs.
The final concept design has reflected feedback with features including more than 75,000 trees, plants and shrubs, new connecting pathways and trails, sheltered picnic tables and benches, drink fountains, arrival and educational signage, bird waterers, bird and bat boxes, and turtle hides, subject to funding.
