The City has renamed its Rangers and Security team to Community Safety to reflect a more proactive, education-first approach to compliance and safety.
Mayor Filomena Piffaretti said the new name better reflects the team’s focus on education and awareness before enforcement.
“Our Community Safety team plays a critical role in helping residents feel safe and supported,” she said.
“They work closely with WA Police to address local concerns, focusing on non-criminal safety issues and acting early through prevention and education.”
“$2.6 million has been allocated in the City’s 2025/26 Budget towards the operation of the City’s Community Safety unit. This includes funding for two new staff to lead our 24/7 Community Safety team, which is highly valued by our community.”
The team includes both Community Safety Officers and Community Rangers who deliver a range of services to support community safety and wellbeing across the City.
Community Safety Officers provide 24/7 patrols. They respond to reports of antisocial behaviour, monitor public areas and provide a visible presence across neighbourhoods. While they don’t have police powers, they serve as a point of contact for neighbourhood disturbances that are not emergencies.
Community Rangers focus on public education and enforcing local laws, including responsible pet ownership, parking, fire prevention and litter control. They also support emergency response efforts and encourage safe, respectful behaviours in public spaces.
