The transformation of Riverside Gardens East into a thriving urban forest is underway, with the first trees planted on site, as part of a special planting day with Bold Park Community School.
Senior science students contributed towards the planting of 15,000 tubestock and 175 established trees on site, which include native species such as flooded gums, marri and swamp paperbark.
Mayor Filomena Piffaretti said the urban forest project would deliver long-term environmental and community benefits.
“The Riverside Gardens Urban Forest project is about creating a greener, cooler environment that will increase our tree canopy, support biodiversity and enhance the way people experience this space now and into the future,” she said.
“Having local students take part helps foster a deeper understanding of the important role trees and open space play in our community.
“It’s inspiring to see our young people contributing to projects that will shape the future of their local environment.”
Recent project milestones have included the completion of all earthworks, irrigation, internal footpaths and pathway lighting.
Concrete seating has been installed for the contemplation area, and construction has commenced on three picnic nodes that will provide welcoming spaces for relaxation and community gatherings.
Stepper logs have been added, offering informal play opportunities and a natural connection to the landscape, as well as habitat features for local fauna and drink fountains.
Future works are expected to be completed in 2026, subject to funding, and will include picnic shelters, additional seating and rubbish bins.
The Riverside Gardens Urban Forest project is jointly funded by the Australian Government’s Urban Rivers and Catchments Program and the City of Bayswater, with the Department of Local Government; the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation, and Water Corporation; and the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions.
