City to celebrate First Nations storytelling with 2025 NAIDOC Week program
From 6 to 13 July, the City will celebrate NAIDOC Week with a series of free events for all ages.
Community members are invited to attend a series of free events exploring First Nations storytelling as part of the City’s NAIDOC Week celebrations from 6 to 13 July.
At the heart of the program is Kaarla Kaatijin, an unmissable production by Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company exploring the significance of fire in Aboriginal culture through a combination of Noongar dreaming stories, language, music and puppetry.
Other activities include a bilingual storytime for families from First Nations author Isobel Bevis, children’s art workshops by Noongar artist Sarah Weston and a Noongar language workshop for adults with Carol Foley.
Mayor Filomena Piffaretti said the City was proud to honour Indigenous voices with a program of events spanning various art forms.
“The City’s NAIDOC Week activities celebrate Indigenous storytelling across theatre, literature and art,” she said.
“Storytelling is at the heart of Aboriginal culture – it’s how Indigenous knowledge and history has been passed down through generations for thousands of years.
“We are delighted to have First Nations artists share this special tradition with our City of Bayswater community.”
NAIDOC Week is celebrated nationally and encourages all Australians to learn about and recognise First Nations history, culture and achievements. The 2025 theme for NAIDOC Week is ‘The Next Generation: Strength, Vision and Legacy’.
