Local business owners are delighted with the installation of a new right-hand turning lane on Whatley Crescent, which once again allows visitors direct access to the Maylands town centre to shop, eat and be entertained.
Following the closure of the Maylands Caledonian Avenue level crossing in March 2022, vehicles approaching from the north side of the rail line were required to use alternative crossings such as Hotham Bridge. However, without a right-turn option onto Whatley Crescent at Hotham Bridge, direct access to the town centre remained limited.
Concerned about the impact on visitation and trade, business owners sought support from the City of Bayswater to help advocate to Main Roads for new traffic signals and the creation of a right-turn lane.
Mayor Filomena Piffaretti said she was pleased the new right-turn lane and traffic signals at the intersection of Whatley Crescent and Hotham Bridge are now operational, making it easier for drivers to reach the Maylands town centre.
“The new signalised right-turn lane provides a safer, more direct route into the town centre and reconnects traffic with local cafés, shops and services,” she said.
“Visitors now have direct access to everything Maylands has to offer, and local businesses are already seeing the difference.
“We’re proud to support our local businesses – they are vital to the life and economy of our City. The City is committed to keeping our town centres vibrant, thriving and accessible.
“This outcome is a testament to the passion of Maylands business owners and their strong advocacy for their community. It’s a great example of what can happen when people work together with a shared vision.”
Local trader Keith Archer, owner of Chapels on Whatley, was instrumental in driving the campaign.
“The right-hand turn is a fantastic initiative that will benefit the community in the long run,” Keith said.
Background
The upgrade follows a community-led campaign from residents and business owners concerned about reduced access into Maylands after the Caledonian Avenue level crossing closed in March 2022. The closure was part of METRONET’s rail upgrades to support the new Airport Line and manage increased train frequency and boom gate downtimes.
