Last night, Council backed concept plans that pave the way for the redevelopment of a key strategic site in the heart of Morley.

Mayor Filomena Piffaretti said the concept plans support the City’s vision to grow the Morley Activity Centre into a vibrant, mixed-use hub.

“The Les Hansman site is strategically located and presents a unique opportunity to deliver a modern library alongside a mix of residential, commercial and community uses,” she said.

“It aligns with our goal to increase local housing and attract new investment to the town centre. With strong planning frameworks in place and no height restrictions, Morley is well positioned to support large-scale, transformative development.

“This concept plan gives us a clear framework to unlock the potential of City-owned land. We’re now seeking partners to help bring this vision to life and deliver long-term benefits to the Morley community.”

Located at 240 Walter Road West, adjacent to Coventry Village, the Les Hansman site currently houses the Morley Library and sits within the Morley Town Centre.

In 2024, the City acquired the adjoining car park from the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage, creating a consolidated 6,300m2 site.

The concept plan covers both the Les Hansman Community Centre and the adjoining car park, and supports a mix of residential, commercial and community uses. Key features include a larger, multi-level library, up to 88 dwellings, landscaped public space, 220 parking bays, and ground-floor commercial and community facilities within a mixed-use development.

The City is now seeking funding and delivery partners, and will advocate for support from both State and Federal Governments to help deliver the project.
