The City of Bayswater is proud to have joined the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower initiative to support community members living with non-visible disability.
As part of the initiative, individuals can collect sunflower-themed lanyards and wristbands from the City’s libraries, community centres and recreation facilities to discreetly signal that they have a non-visible disability and could benefit from additional support.
Staff from across the City recently completed training to learn more about hidden disability and how to recognise and respond to community members wearing the sunflower logo with empathy and understanding.
Staff will be able to wear Sunflower initiative branding to indicate they have completed the training and are able to provide support.
City of Bayswater Mayor Filomena Piffaretti said the City’s participation in the initiative was a subtle but impactful way to make its facilities and workplaces more welcoming for all abilities.
“By participating in the Hidden Disabilities initiative, the City is taking an important step towards ensuring all community members feel seen, supported and confident in accessing our services,” she said.
“With many disabilities not immediately visible, such as autism, hearing loss, chronic pain, dementia and mental health conditions, the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower initiative helps raise awareness to ensure everyone can access support and understanding when they need it.”
The City’s participation in the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower initiative demonstrates its commitment to inclusion and accessibility, and aligns with its Inclusive Bayswater: Access and Inclusion Plan 2025–2030.
