Community members are invited to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of First Nations people by participating in the City’s NAIDOC Week program from 5 to 12 July.
Mayor Filomena Piffaretti said the variety of activities encourage residents to get involved in cultural experiences, storytelling, art and environmental stewardship, with an aim to foster greater understanding and respect within the community.
“With activities ranging from bush tucker tasting to upcycling wooden objects, the City's NAIDOC Week program provides opportunities for our community to come together and learn about traditional practices and knowledge of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples,” she said.
“No matter your age, there is an event for everyone, allowing us all to be further enriched in the place we live and come away with a greater appreciation of Noongar culture and history.”
"Whether attending a workshop, planting a tree, sharing stories with Elders or learning a few words of Noongar language, I encourage everyone to get involved and be part of this important week.”
The program involves a song performance by local children who have been learning Noongar language and culture alongside Elders Aunty Tj and Aunty Alta.
Other activities include a smoking ceremony and community planting day, a bush tucker workshop for all ages with Carol Foley, Cultural workshops for kids with Greg Nannup and an intergenerational upcycle wooden objects workshop with artist Sarah Weston.
NAIDOC Week is celebrated nationally every year in July. This year's NAIDOC Week theme is 50 Years of Deadly, celebrating five decades of recognising and elevating First Nations voices, leadership, culture and resilience.
