The City of Bayswater has implemented a new 40km/hr speed zone across residential streets in Bayswater, delivering safer conditions for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers.

The initiative was endorsed by Council last year given the area’s proximity to several schools, a Safe Active Street and the Bayswater Town Centre.

It also follows completion of the Bayswater Train Station works and Low-Cost Urban Road Safety treatments being installed in the area.

Mayor Filomena Piffaretti said the project reflected the City’s focus on creating safer, more liveable streets for the community.

“Lowering speed limits is one of the most effective ways to improve road safety outcomes, particularly in areas where people walk, ride and connect with their neighbourhood,” she said.

“This initiative will make our residential streets safer for everyone, whether you’re walking to school, cycling to the shops or simply driving locally.”

The project was delivered in partnership with Main Roads WA as part of a shared commitment to improving road safety in local neighbourhoods.

The reduced speed limit applies to local roads within the area bounded by Guildford Road, Garratt Road, Whatley Crescent and King William Street, as well as sections of Olfe Street, Hamilton Street and Whatley Crescent.

As part of the changes, existing 40km/hr school zones in the area now apply at all times, the 30km/hr speed limit on Leake Street remains unchanged, and a section of King William Street has been reduced from 60km/hr to 50km/hr.

New signs and road markings have been installed throughout the area to communicate the updated speed limits.
